Located today at 300 East Pender Street, the 111-year-old Christ Church of China (CCOC) is a witness to the waves of immigration and establishment of the Chinese community in the area now recognized as Strathcona. Oliver Matisz's report, "East of Gore," explores the CCOC's dispute with the municipal government in the midst of Vancouver's 1960s urban renewal program which culminated in the church's relocation from its former site at 340 Keefer. His research is an inquiry into the ways in which the city enacted discrimination through planning and the impact of the city's actions on the Chinese community in the area. Author Bio: Oliver Matisz is a Grade 12 student in Vancouver with an interest in local and national history. His research with the CCHSBC allowed him to gain an increased understanding of how housing, politics, and race intersected at a time of great national change in Canada during the 1960s. He hopes to pursue law in the future, specifically human rights or criminal practice. Your browser does not support viewing this document. Click here to download the document.
