The Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation Summerfest 2018

The Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation Summerfest 2018

Each year, the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation and the Land of the Maquinna Cultural Society host Summerfest – opening magical Yuquot to the world. Yuquot (aka Friendly Cove or Nootka in colonial terms) has been the home of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation for over 4000 years and was where James Cook arrived in 1778. This year, on Saturday, July 21, Summerfest is commemorating the return of Comekela (Chief Maquinna’s brother) from China 230 years ago, and celebrating Yuquot, the home of the Mowachaht peoples, as a global centre on the Pacific. Yuquot is located on the southern tip of Nootka Island.

In 1787, the Mowachaht chief Comekela travelled to China where he lived for a year before returning to Yuquot. Accompanying Comekla when he returned in May of 1788 were dozens of Chinese craftsmen who built the first European-style ship in the Pacific Northwest. Also at Yuquot at this time was a famous Hawaiian chief, Ka'iana.

In recognition of Comekela's historic return from China and the arrival of many transpacific visitors, the University of Victoria Project "Asian Canadians on Vancouver Island: Race Indigeneity and the Transpacific", the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC (CCHSBC) and UBC's Asian Canadian and Asian Migration program (ACAM) are proud to be supporting this year's Summerfest.

A delegation consisting of members from all three groups will be travelling to Yuquot and participating in the festivities. A limited number of spaces are available for those interested in joining us on this trip of a lifetime.

Dates: Friday, July 20 - Sunday, July 22, 2018 -- Summerfest is on Saturday, July 21, 2018).
Cost: $425.00 (includes transportation to/from Vancouver-Lower Mainland to Yuquot, 2-nights double-occupancy accommodations at a local hotel in Gold River).

If you are interested in joining us, please email info@cchsbc.ca to confirm your spot. There are only a few spots available! Email us today!
